The ART OF HUNGRY MARKETING
?Date:  2009-04-07

You’d have to have a heart of stone to avoid being affected by the images of poor, starving children sitting in the bottom of your shopping cart. Any food placed in the shopping cart appear to be delivered right into the needy child’s hands. Feed SA, a South African charity dedicated to feeding disadvantaged people, put these decals in shopping carts and saw a marked increase in donations and a significant boost in website traffic.

THE CUTER SIDE OF BIOLOGY
?Date:  2009-04-07

by Heather Tompkins

3 out of 4 biologists agree: Knitted Lab Rat is the cuddliest biology project, ever! If you think so too, then this, my friend, is the art object for you.

Wow your scientist friends and colleagues with the coolness of this piece of knitted art. The rat is hand knit from an acrylic mohair blend, and his little innards are needle-felted by hand out of 100% wool. He comes pinned into his actual dissection tray, but he is not glued down, so you can take him out and cuddle him if you wish.

COP THE ART OF THE HEIST
?Date:  2009-04-07

From New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, to the Smithsonian Institution in D.C., to Boston's Museum of Fine Art, to dozens of regional museums throughout the United States, no museum was off-limits to legendary art thief Myles Connor. He has used every technique in the book, from breaking and entering, to cat burglary, to false identities and elaborate con jobs. He once even grabbed a Rembrandt off a wall in broad daylight and simply ran like hell. His IQ is at genius level, and his charm is legendary. The fact that he was in jail at the time of the famous robbery of the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum—which remains the largest art theft in American history—has not stopped the FBI from considering him a top suspect in that still unsolved robbery.

HOLY GRAFFITI!
?Date:  2009-04-07

BY Steve Urbon

Tears welled up in Angela Sampaio's eyes as she beheld the Lund's Corner Jesus through her car windshield Wednesday.

"I am really, really, really moved by this," she said. And she wanted reassurance that the photographs of this Jesus are on the Internet. "This will be seen all over the world," she said.

She had plenty of company there in the parking lot of Premier Video, where the slightly larger-than-life depiction of the Saviour appeared on the wall sometime last weekend. In a one-hour span around noon Wednesday, at least 35 people walked or drove to the lot just to see the figure that is pasted to the white brick.

THATS WHAT I CALL A "POT HEAD"
?Date:  2009-03-31

This slightly morbid, yet fascinating human skull was constructed of reclaimed metal cans, pots, pans and bowls. On display, it seemingly floats above the stage snd can be viewed from all angles. Spotlights allow it to shine at night, an eerie reminder of the human condition.

What does it mean when figures of the ancient world who have been depicted for millennia, are now given the tools of the 21st century, like iPhones and iPods?

That's one of the questions that Adam Reeder is trying to explore in his Socio-technic evolution series.

One of the first in the series depicts the Greek god Pan rockin out to his iPod. (No word yet on whats on Pans playlist, but I think we can safely presume "Panic at the Disco" made the cut.) This 22-inch tall piece is currently for sale for $9,800 and would definitely be a striking addition to any serious collection, no doubt.

SURREAL FOR REAL
?Date:  2009-03-31

by Heather Tompkins

The work of American artist Margot Knight sticks in the mind: a strange parallel universe of double takes and playful, sometimes dark, surrealism. She draws inspiration from a rich history of photographic artists who focus on the body and her parents medical textbooks. She says, I begin with objects or bodies or plants and try to give them more life, or a different kind of life. Loneliness, exuberance, and wonder take on physical form. She currently lives and works in Seattle, where she is working on a new series called Procreation.
