D to the Pizzle is part of a group of artists that contributed their skills for a book that's a collection of short stories, based on the summers of the '80s. He illustrated and collaborated on his story's development with writer Jessica Able. Most of the artists that worked on this book, were french, but there were definitely other international flavors that made their mark on this project...

JOE BUCK MAKES A RUNNERS' SOUNDTRACK LOOK GOOD!
?Date:  2009-06-04

POP Culture Pimp, NIKE called upon the masters of style and original...Hip Hop Legends
De La Soul and SOA's own JOE BUCK to add to Nike's ongoing music series known as Original Run. This musical project was designed to assist athletes during their workouts and trainings. The format of the album is supposed to correlate with your workout, starting off slow then peaking and coming back down all within the time frame of a typical workout (40 minutes and change).

Anyways... De La did their thing, but as you can see JOE BUCK did his, as he has before with De La, for albums like De La Soul is Dead. Good to see Joe is still "running" things...

DO YOU NEED AN ARTSCAPISM ?!
?Date:  2009-06-03

Swine flu claims another victim, unemployment skyrockets and the economy seems on the verge of collapse. All people but especially New Yorkers need a place to escape the worries of the world and indulge in a reboot of the senses. That is where SOA steps in. The Sound of Art announces the launching of ARTSCAPISM, a weekend-long art extravaganza that begins on Friday, June 12th at 6 PM in Washington Heights and culminates on Saturday, June 13th at Midnight in DUMBO.

ARTSCAPISM is an SOA first; 2 extraordinary art events taking place back to back...one on Friday night entitled BUENA SUERTE SERIES featuring the work of the illustrious M. Tony Peralta at the Uptown Boutique PROBUS and the other on Saturday showcasing the work of none other than Craig Anthony Miller at his new abode in DUMBO aptly named CAMs CRIB. ARTSCAPISM is an all out weekend art bender that traverses Manhattan and Brooklyn in the matter of 2 days. One event will righteously holler HOPE from the heights of Northern Manhattan while the other celebrates new beginnings from the depths of Planet Brooklyn.

The BUENA SUERTE SERIES is an artistic riff on the hopeful imagery of BELONES, the votive candles cherished by Latinos. This exhibit, held at PROBUS, goes hand in hand with the launching of a collection of T-shirts that bare the same motifs as the artwork. There will be an after party for this event held at the LOCKSMITH BAR.

Not to be outdone, Mr. Miller will be hosting CAMs CRIB, a "down-home-house-warming-get-together", with his art as the focal point. This intimate affair will welcome SOA patrons as family to christen the artists new digs. This event will be introduced with an outdoor picnic at 4 PM before the function begins at 7.

So there you have it. Be there or be square. SOA has the June 12th weekend on lock...so miss it at your own peril!!!

The '08 Recap Collection is Up
?Date:  2009-06-01

S.O.A. not only stands for Sound of Art but at this particular juncture of the year it also means Season Of Art. For us at the Sound of Art this is when our series of genre-bending art exhibits, events and experiences begin. We will set off this art season with The 08 RECAP, a rousing 2008 retrospective, held in our home-base, the Washington Heights/Inwood area. The 08 RECAP will feature artwork from the following SOA exhibits; Tony Phillipou's Sacred Heart, 55DSL's Seen On Audio and JC Cognac's Art of Seduction. This art exhibit will run until June 23 rd 2009 at the posh uptown eatery, Plum Pomidor (4009 Broadway - between 168th and 169th street).

The Sacred Heart collection is Tony Phillipou's ultra personal take on Jeezus and depicts him as an everyman - divine but equally human. Pieces from the Seen on Audio exhibit demonstrate how environmentally conscious artists can be while showing how music influences their art. Works from the Art of Seduction experience pushed artists into using their art to seduce and entrance the viewer. SOA's The 08 RECAP is all about showcasing the range, talent, power and depth of SOA artists.

It is only apt that Plum Pomidor be the venue chosen for this celebration of art, life and beauty. It's the combination of great dishes, entertaining live musicians and discerning patrons that make Plum Pomidor an ideal space for Sound of Art exhibits. Plum Pomidor's owners are progressive thinkers who believe in the importance of art as it relates to the community from which it springs. Synergy is what SOA is all about. This exhibit is the first in SOA's Uptown Series.

A LEGEND IS LOST. GOOD TIMES?!
?Date:  2009-05-05

A righteous rest in peace goes out to artist extraordinaire Ernie Barnes who recently passed away at the age of 70 of a blood disorder. Ernie Barnes is most famous for his Sugar Shack piece that graced the cover of Marvin Gayes album I Want You as well as appearing during the closing credits of Good Times. Not only was Mr. Barnes an incredible artist but he was also an exceptional athlete who played 4 seasons of professional football. Ernie Barnes is no longer with us but his work will live forever.
